The Ohio State football team entered the game as the second most successful team in the AP top 25 college football rankings and Notre Dame was the fifth most successful team in the poll.
Expect the Buckeyes to be locked in at number two, as top-ranked Alabama defeated Utah State in the latest rankings. However, the Irish will fall in these rankings.

Ohio State’s first game was in 1890, where they played Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware and won 20 – 14. They were a football independent from 1890-1901, before joining the Ohio Athletic Conference as a charter member in 1902.
The Buckeyes, who were members of the OAC from 1912 to 1922 and the Big Ten from 1922 on, won two conference championships when they were a part of the OAC.

When Paul Brown first started as an Ohio State football coach, he won their national championship in 1942. Following World War II, Ohio State did not have much success. They hired Woody Hayes in 1951.
This program won 200 games and three national championships during Ohio State’s James A. Hayes period (1954, 1957, 1968) as well as 13 Big Ten conferences and 8 Rose Bowl appearances. After Hayes’ retirement, Earle Bruce coached to a 4-time win of Big Ten more and John Cooper coached the team to 3 conference championships with an additional 13 wins.
Jim Tressel was hired in 2001 and became head coach of the Ohio State football team. Fans saw seven Big Ten championships under his leadership as well as five BCS games. Urban Meyer took over coaching in 2011, bringing with him seven Big Ten Championships and six BCS games.
Three consecutive years under Meyer, the Ohio State football team won three conference championships, 24 consecutive games, and the first national championship ever won by a university from Ohio.
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team is the collegiate football team that represents the University of Notre Dame. They play their home games at the university’s Notre Dame Stadium which has a capacity of 77,622.

Notre Dame is one of seven schools that do not belong to a conference. They only play five games per year against other conference teams in football. These games are against an opponent from the Atlantic Coast Conference, although Notre Dame belongs to all other sports conferences.

Notre Dame has 918 wins, 329 losses and 42 ties, putting it in 4th All-Time place with a winning percentage of .728. They are ranked fifth behind Michigan, Ohio State, Alabama and Texas. Notre Frances’ record is second-lowest of all college programs that have been playing football for 100 years or more.
